Slavery began in Jamestown, Virginia in the year of 1619. Slaves did not have any rights. Masters used the slaves as servants and sometimes gave them harsh punishments. Due to this, slaves tried to escape away from their masters. One way to escape was to use the Underground Railroad, which was introduced in the early 1800s but was mostly used in the 1850s. The Underground Railroad was system in which slaves traveled across The United States on specific routes that were designated to slaves. During their journey many slaves would have stops in between. These stops were also houses of some citizens who were willing to help the slaves. Slaves would eat, get transportation, and sleep in these people's houses. Farmington, CT played a big part in the Underground Railroad.
